What Are Neck Bands?

There are two types of neck bands – those that are vertical in orientation and those that are horizontal. Most commonly, the term ‘neck bands’ in aesthetic medicine refers to the presence of vertical neck bands, but to optimise the appearance of your neck, it is worth considering both types.

Vertical neck bands are most commonly due to excessive downward pull by your neck muscle, called the platysma, which wraps around the front of your neck and your outer lower jawline. Vertical neck bands tend to be more obvious in older women with low body weight or in athletes who lift weights regularly, which activates the platysma muscle when straining. It is important not to confuse vertical neck bands from muscle with saggy neck skin due to skin laxity and ageing or rapid weight loss. In more prominent cases, vertical neck bands can look like vertical ropes connecting the jaw to the chest.

Horizontal neck bands can develop for a variety of reasons. Genetics and repeated changes in neck posture, particularly frequent downward movement such as looking at a phone or laptop (sometimes referred to as “tech neck”), may play a role. Fluctuations in weight can also contribute. These lines often become more noticeable as skin naturally loses firmness and elasticity with age, since skin laxity provides the conditions for lines to become more ingrained over time.

Beautiful necks have been admired throughout history, even as far back as the times of Nefertiti, the Queen of Ancient Egypt, who was revered for her elegant neck among other features. There is no question that a smooth neck, without obvious bands or signs of ageing, can add to a more rejuvenated appearance. At the same time, it is important to remember that lines and changes in the neck are a completely normal and natural part of ageing, something we all experience over time.
