Why Do Marionette Lines And Hollows Form?

Marionette lines are aptly named after those seen on the face of a marionette string puppet.

Marionette lines stretch almost vertically from the corners of your mouth to either side of your chin. In part, they are due to muscle pull when you speak. The Depressor Anguli Oris (or DAO) underlies this area and is responsible for pulling the corners of your mouth down with phonation, creating small lines or dimples in your skin in the process.

Marionette lines are also partly due to changes in volume and structural support in your lower face from the natural ageing process. As you age, there is resorption of your inner jawbone, creating hollows on either side of your chin. These hollows appear deeper due to the presence of jowl fat and lax skin above, hanging over a facial ligament travelling from the corner of your mouth to your jawbone. With time, the marionette hollows become more prominent and marionette lines become more deeply etched.

Mature skin contains less collagen and elastin than youthful skin allowing it to crease more easily and form permanent lines.

If your marionette lines or hollows become more noticeable, they can sometimes give the impression of a tired or downturned expression, even when you feel quite the opposite. It’s important to remember, though, that these changes are a completely normal part of facial ageing and something everyone experiences over time.
