What Are Brown Spots?

Brown spots on your skin are called age spots, or more formally seborrheic keratoses. They represent areas of hyperpigmentation that typically develop as a result of prolonged sun exposure. They often appear on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, decolletage, hands, arms, shoulders, and back. Age spots are more common in older adults, but they can also occur in younger individuals, especially those who spend a lot of time in the sun without adequate protection. SPF 50+ sunscreen every day is a must!

How are Brown Spots Treated In The Dr. Jodie Clinic in Melbourne?

While age spots are usually harmless, it is important to ensure that they are not more significant skin conditions, such as melanomas or pigmented basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), before proceeding with treatment. This is why assessment of your pigmentation in a doctor-led aesthetic skin centre is imperative. At the Dr. Jodie clinic, once we have confirmed your brown spot is in fact benign, our preferred methods of treatment include Intense Pulse Light (IPL) therapy or skin laser treatment.

Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL (Melbourne)

The Medi Pulse Pro XL is a sophisticated IPL device that provides a fantastic solution for brown spot removal in the Dr. Jodie clinic. This non-invasive, advanced technology emits intense pulses of light onto your skin to target a range of chromophores, the molecules responsible for the colour of your skin. In the case of brown spots, melanin present within pigmented cells, is responsible for the brown colour you see. When melanin absorbs light energy as heat, the target cells are damaged, and the body uses its natural renewal processes to replace old, damaged tissue with fresh, new skin that is free from brown spots and (hopefully) full of collagen.

At the Dr. Jodie clinic in Melbourne, we prefer the Medi Pulse Pro XL over other IPL systems, as treatment settings can be highly customised to your skin type and your exact skin needs based on your real time response to treatment. Not all IPLs are built equally and many lack this adjustability. Skin treatments should never follow a cookie cutter approach and IPL should never be a ‘one-size-fits-all’ affair! Unlike conventional IPL systems, Dr Jodie’s Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL also incorporates a Broad Band Light (BBL) like gliding function that enabling your clinician to treat larger areas with more controlled heating, enhancing safety. Overall, the Medi-Pulse Pro XL IPL sets the standard for skin tone enhancement, ensuring a more uniform skin colour.

Serial treatments, a minimum of 2, sometimes more, up to 4 to 6, are usually needed. However, it's essential to schedule your treatment carefully with your social commitments, as it may require some downtime. This treatment is not suitable for darker skin types. All IPL benefits and risks will be carefully explained at your in-persona appointment at the Dr. Jodie clinic.

Excel V+ Laser (Melbourne)

Like the Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL system, the Excel V+ laser can also be used to treat brown spots on your face, neck, décolletage and body. This advanced laser technology delivers a focused beam of light along a 532nm wavelength to target melanin in pigmented cells of your skin – and as described above, you know how that ends! Whilst primarily a vascular laser, it represents a great alternative to IPL and can be used in the same treatment session to eliminate broken facial blood vessels and facial redness. It too comes with some recovery time and is not suited to darker skin types.

Laser Genesis (Melbourne)

It is worth mentioning that at the Dr. Jodie clinic, we have Green Laser Genesis in addition to Traditional Laser Genesis, which is a cutting-edge advancement in laser technology that targets diffuse pigmentation, as well as redness and skin texture irregularities. It has the benefit of no to minimal downtime, but would take multiple sessions, potentially 4-6 treatments or more, to lighten an isolated brown spot. While it may not be our first choice, it is a potential option for those who are averse to recovery time, as it is a non-invasive no or limited downtime treatment.

Skin Care, Skin Peels, LED therapy (Melbourne)

Never underestimate the value of regular skin care, profession skin peels and Light Emitting Diode (LED) therapy in helping to minimise the appearance of brown spots and pigmentation on your face. Your Dr. Jodie clinician can tailor a treatment plan that incorporates these options with your IPL or laser treatment.
