Why Do Brows Become Heavy With Ageing?

It is common for brows to droop and lose shape as you age. This is due to a number of reasons.

Brow position is dictated by the balance of muscle activity between the forehead and frown. The forehead muscle, known as frontalis, elevates your brow, while the complex of muscles that form the frown, including procerus and your corrugators, pull your brow down. Over time, frontalis can weaken and become less effective at lifting your brow, leading to a hooded appearance. Simultaneously, the depressor activity of your frown muscles can become more dominant, exacerbating the situation.

Loss of bone, deep fat, and superficial fat from the forehead and brow area can also lead to facial volume loss that affects your facial structure and brow position, with visible lowering of your brow.

And finally, mature skin tends have increased laxity from loss of collagen and elastin content, leading to sag and brow heaviness or droop.

How Can The Dr. Jodie Clinic Help With Your Brow Heaviness?

At the Dr. Jodie clinic, we offer consultations on how to address your brow heaviness.

A feminine brow should be upsloping with a defined arch and a lifted outer aspect, whereas a masculine brow tends to sit lower and is more horizontal in orientation. It is possible to subtly lift your brow with non-surgical measures to help elevate a saggy upper eyelid and refresh the eye area, creating a more wide-eyed appearance, without looking permanently surprised.

To achieve a lifted brow, a combination of solutions will likely be recommended and may include medical treatments, skin care, skin peels, LED therapy, mono threads, and devices, such as Laser Genesis and the Scarlet S Radio Frequency Microneedling. In fact, the Scarlet S technology is rather unique in that it can be used to treat the skin of your entire upper and lower eyelids to promote skin tightening and textural improvements!

Please note that any treatment that includes the use of schedule 4 medications cannot legally be advertised online, as directed by our governing body the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), so it is not a feature of our discussion here.

Your first step is always consultation with your Dr. Jodie clinician.

Tailored Approach to Brow Heaviness In Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie Clinic

Your Dr. Jodie clinician will systematically analyse your face to determine what individual factors are contributing to your heavy brow. By identifying your unique genetic and age-related changes, she can tailor your treatment to deliver the best possible result for you. This means assessing whether your brow position is mainly due to downward muscle pull, or saggy skin, or loss of fat or bone in your forehead or brow, or combination of events. Her bespoke treatment plan will incorporate the perfect blend of treatments for your specific needs. There is never a ‘one size fits all’ or ‘cookie cutter approach’. At the Dr. Jodie clinic, we don’t believe in following trends, such as ‘fox eye’ treatments, but instead will curate an approach that suits your unique face.

Refereshed Focus For Your Brow Heaviness At Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie Clinic

No one wants to look permanently surprised. When addressing brow heaviness, it is important to understand that an overly arched brow is not a sign of youth – you only need to observe the nearest toddler to see that naturally our brows do not sit in a persistently elevated position. In fact, an overly arched brow can be ageing in the mature adult. Your Dr. Jodie clinician has the skills and know-how to ensure your outcome is refreshing and not undesirable. It is possible to ‘open up’ your eyes without looking fake or startled.

Your Dr. Jodie clinician also understands that our clients may desire different outcomes with respect to their brow treatments. A higher, more arched brow can feminise a masculine look, while excessive volume replacement of the brow and forehead can masculinise a feminine look. Your Dr. Jodie clinician is experienced at delivering gender-sensitive treatments and will always endeavour to ensure that your brow compliments the rest of your face.
